Indonesia Digital Trade Report

Tuesday, February 12, 2019, AlphaBeta and the Hinrinch Foundation launched their research report on Digital Trade in Indonesia entitled The Digital Komodo Dragon: How Indonesia Can Capture The Digital Trade Opportunity At Home and Abroad. This report discusses the current contribution and potential of the future of digital commerce for the Indonesian economy. The report also recommends important policy actions that need to be taken to capture digital trading opportunities and to reduce and manage risk.

Present was Mr. Rudy Salahuddin Deputy for Coordination of the Creative Economy, Entrepreneurship, and Competitiveness of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs who opened this launching activity. This launch also presents industry players and observers as panelists who can explain the current conditions of digital trade in Indonesia.

  • The results of the Digital Trade report by the Hinrich Foundation predict that digital trade can create economic opportunities worth 2.305 trillion Rupiah for Indonesia by 2030.
  • Digital trade can have a very significant positive impact on Indonesia's domestic economy, with some of the largest beneficiaries coming from outside the digital sector.
  • The added value of digital trade for the Indonesian domestic sector can grow up to 18 times and reach 2,305 trillion Rupiah (US $ 172 billion) in 2030.
  • Digital exports only account for 1 percent of the current value of Indonesia's exports.
  • Digital exports can grow up to 768 percent from the current level to reach 240 trillion Rupiah (US $ 18 billion) in 2030.
  • To maximize the return on investment in the future from digital commerce, the barriers to digital trade need to be reduced, such as the potential for imposing import duties on digital product imports.
